A History of Refinement
Derived from the French term meaning a "competition of elegance," the Concours d'Elegance has a rich history dating back to 17th-century French society. What began with horse-drawn carriages parading through the parks of Paris has evolved into a prestigious event showcasing antique and classic automobiles for both competition and celebration.
The Genesis of Cobble Beach
In early 1998, Mr. Willis McLeese was approached by Ms. Dorothy Telford, a local real estate agent and board member of the Georgian Riding Association for Challenged Equestrians (GRACE), to consider purchasing a spectacular 574-acre property just north of Owen Sound, now known as Cobble Beach. After reviewing the site, which slopes approximately 250 feet down to Georgian Bay, Willis' 85-year-old mind began racing with possibilities. Willis and his son, Rob, envisioned a magnificent promenade of high-end, beautiful antique and classic cars parading down Cobble Beach Drive to the elegant Clubhouse, a sight both magical for viewers and drivers. This vision inspired the conception of the Concours d'Elegance at Cobble Beach. In 2011, Mr. Joseph Sulpizi, CEO and Founder of The Brand Factory, introduced Mr. Billy Smilovsky of Engineered Automotive to Mr. Rob McLeese, CEO and co-creator of Cobble Beach. With a shared vision of hosting a Concours d'Elegance at Cobble Beach, they fulfilled Willis McLeese's dream, making it their own as well.
